Some stories just can’t be made up. When Jon Guttormsen met Tony Zucco back in 2003, neither of them suspected that their friendship would be start of a venture that would bring pleasure to hundreds of holidaymakers… and that would become one of the best-loved tales in the sailing world!
“Throw me a line, Jon!”
Jon Guttormsen was mooring up in the Greek harbour of Naxos Town when he heard an Australian voice shout for a line. A highly experienced sailor, Jon had spent most of his life on the seas, and through his expert tuition he had passed that love on to his family and friends. Five years before, Jon had founded Jon Martins Seilskole – a sailing school that operated out of the Greek Islands, and that already had a dedicated following back in his native Norway.
Tony Zucco had travelled to Naxos for the same two reasons as Jon: a love of sailing, and a love of the Greek Islands. Tony had grown up in Australia around power boats, so his sailing history was quite different to Jon’s – but, like Jon, he adored the ocean, and was a talented and experienced boat handler.
Throwing Tony a mooring line that afternoon and the rest, as they say, is history…
A meeting of minds…
Jon’s Seilskole was growing in popularity, and was taking bookings from further and further afield. The school had been founded back in 1998, and Jon’s relaxed, hands-on style of teaching and obvious love of sailing was infectious. It wasn’t long before Jon realised that together, the sailing school could be taken to an even wider audience and Tony soon began sailing his own yacht under the name of Get Away Sailing.
When Jon retired in July 2007 he ceased teaching and operating Jon Martins Seilskole however his experience and methods of teaching live on through Tony and the team of expert instructors.
